Missouri Compromise • Missouri Compromise of 1820 (Henry Clay) 1.Divided the Louisiana Territory at the 36˚ 30’ N latitude • Anything north (excluding Missouri) would be free territory • Anything south would be a future slave state 2. Maine (free state) was created out of Massachusetts to balance the power between slave and free states in Congress.
