Terms • Assertion = answer • Support = evidence
Acronym To Remember • A - Assertion • S - Support • S – Stop An OER response must ONLY be TWO sentences! Now you will always remember how to answer an OER.
Rules of the Assertion • Do not use ‘I think, I believe, etc” • Do not use ‘it, him, they, she, he” • Restate the question to begin your assertion. • Only state what you can support with your evidence- in other words, don’t write too much. • Your assertion must be a complete sentence.
For Example… • Q: How would you describe Abigail Williams’ personality? • A1: She is mean, and selfish and hateful. • A2: She is not a good person. • A3: Abigail Williams’ personality is that of a selfish person. • A4: I think she is selfish. What is the best response?
Rules of the Support • The quote MUST support (talk about or mention) EVERYTHING in the assertion. • You DO NOT need to cite your quote. Ignore what you’ve been told. • You can blend the quote OR just make it the entire second sentence. • If you do blend the quote, do not add any extra information. This can result in a 1 if you add additional unsupported ideas.
Practice If my assertion is “Abigail Williams’ personality is that of a selfish person.” What is the best choice for evidence? E1: “She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” E2: “She sent her spirit on me in church.” And now… E3: Abigail shows how mean she is when she says “She made me do it!” E4: Abigail selfishly blames Tituba for the activities in the woods and tells the men of the village that “[Tituba] made me do it! She made Betty do it!”
The bottom line…. • Specific Assertion • Supporting Evidence • Don’t get too fancy- stick to the formula (A.S.S.).
