The Godly Way to Celebrate the Good Things of Our Life 2 Samuel 21:15- 23:39
Point #1 • The world celebrates from the basis of enjoying the moment and trying to forget the past; the Christian celebrates from the basis of remembering the past good things that God has done for him or her.
Scripture • 2 Samuel 21:15-22 (NIV)15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted.16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new [sword], said he would kill David.
Scripture • 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David's rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David's men swore to him, saying, "Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished."18 In the course of time, there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod
Scripture • 20 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot--twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha.21 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David's brother, killed him.22 These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men
Point #2 • The world gives credit for their victories to themselves or to some other person in the world; the Christian should always give the credit to God.
Scripture • 2 Samuel 22:1-4 (NIV) • 1 David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-- from violent men you save me. 4 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
Point # 3 • Just because as a Christian I give the credit to God for the good things in my life, it does not mean that I have no obligation to give honor to whom honor is due.
Scripture • 2 Samuel 23 (Various Scriptures)17 ... Such were the exploits of the three mighty men. • 18 Abishai the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19 Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
Scripture 22 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty men. 23 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
Conclusion Just think what could happen if you brought your victory journal to church and thought about what God has done in your life this week as you prepare to worship. I assure you that your worship would be more of a celebration than just a routine.
