  2. The Beginning • Muslim Turks occupied Christian lands such as Jerusalem • Byzantines reached out for assistance, their cities were being raided • Pope Urban II urged Christians to drive out Muslims • The series of Holy Wars known as The Crusades proceeded

  3. The First Crusade • The most successful Crusade for the Christians • Also known as the People’s Crusade • Led by Count Raymond IV • Supportedby many wandering preachers Wandering Preacher Peter the Hermit

Urban’s Speech at Council of Clermont Most beloved brethren: Urged by necessity, I, Urban, by the permission of God chief bishop and prelate over the whole world, have come into these parts as an ambassador with a divine admonition to you…as the most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked them and have conquered the territory of Romania as far west as the shore of the Mediterranean and the Hellespont… 1095 A.D.

  6. The Second Crusade • Led by King Louis VII of France and Conrad III • Tried to attack Damascus • The Muslims defeated the Christians easily • Remnants of Christian army returned home empty handed

  7. Crusades 3-9 • None were as successful as the First • All resulted in embarrassment

  8. The Children’s Crusade • Took place in 1212 A.D. • Led by Stephen of Cloyes • French and German Children marched into the Holy Land • Children were enslaved and persecuted

Results • The crusades are known as a “successful failure” • The Christians lost the Holy Lands • Monarchies flourished • Papal power grew briefly • Warring fleets were converted into merchant’s boats • Trade grew significantly • Crusaders brought back many trade items and the economy flourished
