  2. EARTH’S ENERGY SOURCES • A. Solar Energy • The earth relies on the sun for over 99% of its total energy • On average, the amount that reaches the earth is 340 watts of energy per square metre • Of this, only 51% percent is actually absorbed by the earth.

  4. What happens to the 51% that is absorbed by earth? • Transferred back into the atmosphere:-as latent heat by the evaporation of water (23%) -by heated rising air (7%) Radiated directly back into space (6%) • Transferred into the atmosphere by radiation, then reradiated into space (15%)

  6. C. Energy from other sources… • A small amount of the earth's energy comes from non-solar sources. • Geothermal (0.013%) heat from within the earth's surface • Tides (0.002%) caused by the gravitational influences of thesun and moon. • Waste heat from fossil fuel consumption (0.007%)
