  1. Quickwrite 11/8 • Consider the following principles: • The right to die • Pro choice vs pro life • Same sex marriage • Legalization of marijuana • Gun control • Death penalty • Affirmative action • Rank them in order of importance to you. • Which of the principles might you be willing to fight for—or willing to uphold if it meant making a sacrifice? • If none of these issues are important to sacrifice for, what issue do you consider critical or of utmost importance?

  2. Next step • Find all individuals in the class who match your number one choice. • With that group, discuss why this issue is so important to you. • Create a group chart that explains your ethical, logical and emotional reasons for selecting this topic • Share with class as persuasively as possible

  3. November 8 • Introduce “Controversial Issues” paper • Pick your topic • Homework: Find and bring an article or one page (minimum) of information that relates to your issue. Be sure to utilize credible sources (ie. NO WIKIPEDIA). Use wiki as a source to find articles, not as the credible source. • Reminders: Pay for Othello. Return Beowulf and Grendel.

  4. November 9 & 10 • Warm up • Read, highlight and annotate the information that you’ve brought to class. • Prepare a KWL chart for your issue based on the prior knowledge and the information from the text.

  5. November 9 and 10 • Small group discussion • Create a group with three to four individuals who have the same topic. • Share the info from all the articles and add the new information from the article to your personal KWL chart.

  6. November 9 & 10 • Critical Questions • Using your butcher paper, you will do the following: • Formulate questions regarding the constitutionality, the morality, and the ethics of your issue. • What questions do you need to answer to persuade your reader that your stance on the issue is morally, constitutionally, and ethically sound? • These questions will be used as the basis for research on your topic.

  7. Homework • Create an outline for your paper. • Outlines will be reviewed on Monday Nov 15. • Outlines must include a works cited page that lists at LEAST THREE (3) of the sources that you will use for the paper. • Time will be given for research in class on Nov 16 & 17.
