Multimedia can Transform your Classroom: Why Its Worth the Effort Presented by: Terri Friedlander, Business Education Teacher Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School
Overview • Multimedia rules today’s world and the internet. • Dee Lucas, Cocoa Beach Media Specialist, attended FETC and said “We need to be using the KIDS Technology of today with our content!” • This little video is a great parody- “When I Become a Teacher?” http://homepage.mac.com/lesleyu/iMovieTheater.html Trivia: Where is the headquarters of Apple computers? Giveaway a CD
A little about me • Teach computer literacy in Business Ed classes • Held other jobs like programmer, consultant and manager of the computer • Last year, I heard about Florida’s Master Digital Educator program • Great Resources for all teachers on their web site • http://fcit.usf.edu/laptop • Run by University of South Florida in Tampa • Why it worth the effort?? • USF is spending millions of dollars to get teachers in Florida to implement lessons with multimedia • Exciting program that really motivated me to use the latest technology for my lessons
A little history • 31 teachers were selected - Mac and IBM compatibles and some from Apple Distinguished Educator program • Show “Think Different” Video http://www.theapplecollection.com/Collection/AppleMovies/mov/thinkdif.html • Apple Computers encouraged and rewarded teachers to use technology • Trivia: What year did Apple launch the Think Different campaign? CD giveaway
A little about my students • Often high school kids already know how to create a basic Word document so they’re Bored. • Took a computer elective to play games all period on the internet? • Always have a Mixed level of computer experience. • Last year I heard Dr. Will Daggett at the inservice at Astronaut HS – Very inspiring message • Lots about globalization with an emphasis on technology education to provide our students with skills to compete for jobs – the future of technology is a PC the size of a watch • The challenge for me (and all teachers) is to engage them, to motivate them, to entertain them almost the way they find the internet entertaining while they are being educated. • Multimedia can do all these things in your classroom Trivia: Where is the headquarters of IBM? Giveaway a CD.
Beyond PowerPoint • Sure you can teach students how to make a slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint. Need slide transitions, sound clips and animations • But how to Engage students with this lesson? • Instead of clipart, get animated icons • Which bus is better ?
Or this? • http://www.animationfactory.com and get animated icons • Or this? Custom Animations • Create a Motion Path – Actions/Sounds
How can you use a digital camera to enhance lessons? • Multimedia Hardware – digital camera • Class introductions • Click here for http://www.cbhs.podomatic.com • Take their photos and have them use it in their electronic portfolios • Calendar Project for the year - use as a gift • Country Project – use as a multidisciplinary social studies project
Multimedia hardware-web camera • Walmart sells it for $25 • Kids use them for video chat • You can make a movie to show to class if there will be a substitute • You can record a student’s review of a book and make a Book Talk- Promote reading of the Sunshine State Books. • We did this with this little web camera. • Heir Apparent by Emily
How to Make A Book Talk Video with a web camera • Ask a student to be your Interviewee • Begin with a script of questions on the book such as the author, the plot and the main characters • Capture the video with the software • Import the video into the program Microsoft Moviemaker (or if you are a Mac fan, use the program called iMovie) The programs do essentially the same thing. • Import still pictures into Moviemaker and add slide titles and captions. • Why it’s worth the effort? Students love to see themselves and it promotes reading! Chasing Vermeer by Laura
Software: Microsoft Moviemaker or Apple iMovie • How much is Windows Moviemaker? • Answer-Its FREE!! • Its installed already in Windows 2000 and xp • Its really easy to learn • hand out the moviemaker booklet TRIVIA: What year did the world wide web begin? Handout a CD to the winner
Ideas for Moviemaker • Pasco HS has done so much • Teacher video for parents • http://www.turtlesteach.com • Leave a video for students if substitute for the class • Students make video storytelling • http://www.phs.podomatic.com/
Show steps to Moviemaker • Capture Video • Split video, cut video, edit sound • Create beginning slide and end slide • Add transition effects on slide or video • Add music files • Add digital photos • Save as a .wmv file for the internet or for a Windows media player
What is a podcast? • Do your students own ipods? • Do they download music regularly? • We should know as much as they know. • Click on the result of our video online • http://www.cbhs.podomatic.com • Upload to any one of free sites
Why Multimedia Is Worth The Effort? • Do you feel appreciated?? • A student who couldn’t get Excel and was struggling, became alive with the Calendar project! Loved putting in the words of wisdom and photos. Did most of it at home for hours! • Kid who just loved making the calendar actually thanked me for inspiring him and made it better over Holiday Break • Another student’s mother wrote me a note about how much their child learned and would use in the future! • Even Kids who are into sports loved working on the school video • Focus kids on the positive about their environment • Promotes School Pride! • Integrates with promoting reading and writing • Suddenly students who always wanted to play games on the internet were playing “games” by working on custom animations in PowerPoint. • Technology is the future. Students are better prepared for the world of work and college
Reflection • How do you/could you integrate digital images into your curriculum? • How could students create their own digital images and videos in your classroom? • How might this technology enhance your existing lesson, units, or projects?
More about the MDE program • Most of what I’ve done recently is due to the Florida Master Digital Educator program. • It’s a training opportunity • It’s an opportunity to train people over the summer and hear their input • It’s a networking opportunity! • My fellow MDE’s have shared their great ideas • Click here to see what they’re doing in Palm Beach county: http://www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/pahokeemiddlesrhigh/fetc2007/freetechnology.html
