Media Summary: overall coverage in print • Overall print media coverage on health issues was driven by HIV/AIDS coverage, with over 70% coverage. • Over 50% of the coverage on HIV/AIDS focused on HIV/AIDS intervention, and 26% was focused on reports on HIV/AIDS prevalence. Coverage of Malaria related issues received around 10% of print coverage.

  21. Topic summaries: overall coverage • On topics coverage, over 50% of coverage was around intervention and 26% on prevalence. Coverage on the ongoing efforts towards management and eradication of the pandemic and the link between HIV/AIDS and TB. • Less coverage to Malaria related issues, with most issues focusing on anti-malaria drug related issues. Notable were reports of the difficulties faced by people living with AIDS (PLWA’s) in IDP camps as they lack support networks and face stigmatization. • Child Health: Tribulations facing women during delivery in the IDP camps due to lack of proper facilities and medical support. • Health policy issues, coverage focused on; the government embarks on a programme to provide home based care for those infected with HIV/AIDS, government issues TB warning as new drug resistant strain emerges and new debates on PMTCT programme over poor uptake of the programme.

Topic summaries: coverage by media • Most publications gave greater coverage to issues around HIV/AIDS intervention. • Under others topics covered were, child health and HIV/AIDS research. • Issue under intervention gave focus to, Uganda; where home based care efforts are bearing fruit even as AVR supplies are increased, Kenya; number of VCT’s in Nyanza increase by 4% and NACC chair gets award for her efforts in her efforts in fighting against HIV/AIDS in Kenya. • Under HIV/AIDS prevalence, Naivasha reports about 800 cases of TB with 70% being HIV+, post election crisis period highlighted as an all time high report of rape cases is recorded including exposures to HIV. • Under TB and HIV/AIDS, TB cases linked to HIV/AIDS are on the rise as the disease becomes difficult to manage with new drug resistant strains emerging.
