Central Nervous System(Brain and Spinal Cord) • Brain Stem • Maintains • blood pressure • heartbeat • Respiration • digestion • Cerebellum • Controls balance and posture • Helps fine-tune muscle movement • Cerebrum • Interprets information that sense gather • Controls muscle movement, thinking , language
Neurons(nerve cells) • Nerve cells pass messages throughout your body • Dendrites- carry messages from neurons to the cell body • Axon – carry messages away from the cell body to other nerve cells
Axon A. Dendrites B. Soma (cell body) C. Synaptic Nerves D
Impulse • A message that travels across a neuron and from one neuron to another • Travels in one direction • Dendrite to cell body to axon • Processed by the brain • Brain interprets information then sends message to body • Messages go through the spinal cord
Safety • Avoid illegal drugs and alcohol • Wear protective gear when playing sports • Wear seat belts • Never dive in shallow pool • Injuries or diseases: • concussion, • Paralysis • Multiple sclerosis
Peripheral Nervous System Voluntary actions Involuntary Actions Not under conscious control Message does not pass through the brain Reflex: a response that happens automatically Example: breathing, heart rate, digestion, touching hot surface • Cranial and spinal nerves travel from the Central Nervous system to the skeletal muscles • Example: answering the phone when it rings, running after a ball, writing down notes
