  1. Hyphae • The cells of fungi are arranged into “strings” called hyphae.

  2. Getting food • Fungi are heterotrophs. • Hyphae grow toward a food source, then release digestive chemicals. • The digestive chemicals break down the food, then the hyphae absorb the food.

  3. Reproducing • A mushroom that you see in the woods is just the part of the fungus that reproduces (the “fruiting body). • It is connected to many hyphae underground.

  4. Reproducing, continued • The fruiting bodies release spores, which grow into new fungi. • Reproduction is usually asexual but can be sexual.

  5. Spores vs. seeds- what is the difference? • Seeds contain sugars and other “food” to help the new plant start growing. Spores do not contain “food.” • Spores can survive for a long time in unfavorable conditions.

  6. Diagram of a mushroom

  7. Why are these mushrooms growing in a circle?

  8. 10/6 Do NowMake a series of questions (like you saw in the Candy Classification key) to tell the following organisms apart: Ms. Shah, Mr. Valle, algae, and a mushroom. Today’s Schedule • Do Now • Hand back work • Collect HW 7 • Make your own dichotomous keys Homework Study for tomorrow’s quiz: protists and fungi. Study CW 12 and HW 5.

  9. 10/7 Do NowDescribe 3 characteristics that you think would be very helpful in classifying organisms, and 2 characteristics that you think would NOT be as helpful for classification. Today’s Schedule • Do Now • Quiz: fungi and protists • LJOC observation • Work on dichotomous keys Homework None

  10. 10/8 Do NowExplain at least 3 ways that a mushroom is different from a plant. Today’s Schedule • Do Now • Good things • CW 13: Mushroom dissection lab • Hand in your lab! • LJOC observations when finished • Last few minutes of class: progress reports Homework Get your parent/guardian to sign your progress report. Bring it to class on Tuesday.
