  2. The Basics Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses At the end of course, students take AP Exams—standardized exams that measure how well students have mastered college-level course work. Students who do well on AP Exams can earn credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college.

The Benefits of AP Courses AP courses can be challenging, but it’s work that pays off. • AP courses are often the most interesting and fulfilling courses a student takes in high school. • AP teachers are among the most prepared, dedicated, and inspiring teachers at their schools. • Students develop confidence, and learn the study habits and time management skills essential for success in college.

  4. AP andRank in Class • Rank is first calculated with the top 15 credits following first semester of Junior year. It is calculated again after second semester of Junior year, using top 18 credits. • Rank in class is based on a weighted grading system. • Weights are assigned to courses as follows: Advanced Placement 9 Pre AP and Dual Credit 8 Regular Education 7 Local Credit 0 Below 70 in any course 0

  5. Top 10% Law High School Graduates in the top 10 % of their class are automatically admitted to any Texas Public University. (UT Austin automatically admits Top 8%.) • A student must: • Enroll in college no more than two years after graduating from high school • Submit an application to a Texas public university for admission before the institution's application deadline • Students may still be required to provide SAT or ACT scores, although these scores are not used for admissions purposes • Students must also take the THEA test, unless exempted from the test requirement Admission to a university does not guarantee acceptance into a particular college of study or department.

  7. Recognition as a Texas Scholar requires 4 advanced measures above and beyond the academic requirements (RHSP). Academic PlanningDistinguished Achievement Program (DAP)

Advanced Measures Distinguished Achievement Program Score a 3 or higher on the national exam for an AP course (1-4 measures can be obtained in this area) before the senior year PSAT score that qualifies the student as a Commended Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar, or National Achievement Scholar (only 1 measure can be obtained in this area) Grade of 3.0 or higher in a college course. (1-4 measures can be obtained in this area) Original research/project judged by a panel of professionals in the field that is the focus of the project. (1-2 measures can be obtained in this area) *** You may not double count an achievement.

AP and College Admission • Colleges rank “Grades in college prep courses” and “Strength of curriculum” as the top two factors in the admission decision.* • 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.** “We look favorably on students who have taken AP courses.   11. What Are AP Courses Like? AP courses typically demand more of students than regular or honors courses. • Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. • More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. • AP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.

  12. AP Exams • AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. • Exams usually last around three hours. • Each AP Exam contains: • Multiple-choice questions • Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response)

AP Exam Fees • Regularly, the AP Exam fee for 2012 is $87 per exam. • For students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, the College Board provides fee reduction so the exam fee is $13. • In Texas, additional funding from AP Strategies and DISD provide these additional fee subsidies: • English, Math or Science exams are $28 each • All others are $56 each

  14. Why Take AP Exams? More than 3,200 colleges and universities offer credit or advanced placement for qualifying AP Exam scores. This includes more than 90 percent of four-year U.S. colleges and universities. • Credit: Students earn points toward their college degrees • Advanced placement: Students can skip introductory courses, enter higher-level classes, and/or fulfillgeneral education requirements.

AP Credit Expands Students’ Options College credit earned through AP Exams allows students to move into upper-level college courses sooner, pursue a double major, and gain time to study and travel abroad. • “As a freshman, I was able to skip general education requirements and head straight into the higher-level classes I wanted to take. AP Credit Policy Information Information about AP credit and placement policies at many colleges and universities is available at www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy. • Search by college or university name or by letter of the alphabet • You will see two things for each school: • A link to the college’s own Web page that details its AP credit and placement policies. • A statement by the college or university about its AP policy.

AP Helps Students Graduate on Time… Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a college degree on time. • Only one in four students who enter college complete a bachelor’s degree in four years.* • A recent study** showed that students taking AP courses and exams were much more likely to earn a college degree in four years.   18. … and Save Money • Students who take five years or more to graduate can spend $8,000-$27,000 for each additional year in college. • The typical college cost per year for a four-year public institution is $8,142 for in-state students and $19,670 for out-of-state students.* • Students attending private institutions might expect to incur $27,389 for each additional year it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree.* * Costs include tuition, fees, and books and supplies only, and do not include room, board, and other living expenses.
