  1. While most diseases in men are preventable, a lot of them are the major causes of death in men. The presence of one disease could lead to another. Dementia, heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and stroke all have same risk factors - smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and family history. Let’s look at the most common diseases that affect men: Heart Disease Heart Disease Heart disease is one of the major causes of death in men. These diseases include heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms and sudden cardiac arrest. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and family history are the major risk factors. These factors can be controlled and the risks associated can be minimized if proper care is taken. Canc Cancers ers Cancers like lung cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and colon and rectal cancers are quite common in men. A healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing cancer. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, including a healthy diet, regular exercise can help decrease the risk. Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease When a healthy person experiences gradual loss of cognition and intellectual ability such as problem solving, language, memory and attention, he is suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease. There has not been any cure for this disease yet and the cause is unknown. However, the risk of dementia could be reduced by keeping diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure

  2. under control and avoiding smoking. Dementia is usually associated with recurrent head injuries. Keeping socially active and being physically and mentally fit may help prevent dementia. Kidney disease Kidney disease The kidneys purify the blood by filtering the impurities that are disposed off in the urine. Kidneys also maintain electrolyte balance in the blood. The efficiency of kidneys gradually decreases with age and often leads to kidney failure. It could also result from years of poorly controlled diabetes and high blood pressure. Diabetes Diabetes Pancreas in our body secretes insulin that helps cells use glucose for energy. Diabetes occurs when there is an abnormal insulin function in the body. If not controlled, diabetes can raise the level of blood sugar in the bloodstream, affecting the small vessels in the body in the long run, which could lead to multi organ failure. Poorly controlled diabetes can also cause vascular diseases such as heart attacks, kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, etc. It's very important to eat a well-balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, keep active and exercise regularly for the prevention and control of diabetes. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) COPD could be of two types – emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Both these types are most commonly caused by smoking. Toxins in smoke damage the lung tissue affecting its ability to transfer oxygen to the bloodstream. The risk of lung infection or pneumonia increases with COPD. Symptoms could include wheezing and shortness of breath. It is important that men get proactive about leading a healthy life in order to prevent these health risks. In India, men often take a back seat while addressing their own health concerns. For reasons of fear or having a dismissive attitude, or for financial reasons, men tend to procrastinate, but such attitude becomes the root cause of diseases carried by most men.
