Is the youth today getting proper nutrition Nutrition is the most important part of well-being and health. Good nutrition combined with regular physical activity makes you strong, gives you energy and makes you feel good about yourself. On the other hand poor nutrition (manifested from malnutrition and over- nutrition) is one of the major causes of suffering in the world. Deficiency of one or more essential nutrients (calcium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, or amino acids) in the body is defined asmalnutrition, which leadtoincreased vulnerability to diseases and reduced ability to work. Over-nutrition is defined as the consumption of too many calories as compared to the activity levels. With time, over-nutrition can lead to obesity which can give rise to chronic and life threatening diseases likes heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Youth today because of sedentary lifestyles are experiencing serious health issues like obesity. But obesity is not the only health problem with sedentary lifestyle. You are at a much higher risk of getting obese if you are sitting all day without moving around. Sedentary lifestyle leads to overall poor nutrition and if poor nutrition doesn’t lead to obesity, it will put you at risk for many health conditions. However, with simple changes in life you can improve your nutrition. So, this National Nutrition Week, let’s work towards getting better nutrition and be healthy. 1.Eat a low-fat and healthy breakfast consisting of fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products every morning. 2.Have fish at least 3 times a week, ideally catfish, flounder or salmon. Have soy products, legumes, nuts and seeds if you are a vegetarian. 3.Eat only when you are hungry and eat often so that you are never starving. Have your last meal at least 3 hrs before hitting the bed. 4.Drink one or two glasses of water before every meal so that they will fill you up and you will consume less calories. 5.Switch to fruit or low-fat frozen yogurt for your daily craving of high-fat, high calorie dessert. 6.While shopping for grocery, buy one fruit and vegetable that you have never tasted before.
7.Avoid foods that have trans/ saturated fats, white foods (white rice, white bread, creamy sauces, white pasta) and products that contain simple sugars including high fructose corn syrup in the first few ingredients. 8.Wash the vegetables and fruits thoroughly and eat them with their skin on. 9.Switch to 9-inch plates from the usual 11 to 13-inch for your meals. Smaller plates would make you eat smaller portions. 10.Avoid movie popcorn. It may be called buttered but it’s actually soaked in the worst oils- hydrogenated and saturated with only a bit of butter flavouring. Some theatres offer air popped popcorn and popcorn popped in unsaturated oils. If you love popcorn, ask them about the oil used and let them know you are concerned. 11.Fill up on high-fibre, low-fat salad bar servings if you are trying to lose weight. Fibre makes you full without consuming a lot of calories. Avoid processed salad dressings; go for natural homemade ones, for instance: vinegar+ lemon juice+ olive oil.
