Pronoun references • Pronouns should refer to their antecedents. Revise and explain why the sentences should be revised. • 1. Mike became a good friend of Mark’s after he helped him repair his car. • 2. I answered the test questions, collected my pencils and pens, and handed them in.
Relative Pronouns • Which, that, who, whom, whose, and what That is used to describe something essential to the meaning. • Those are the dishes that I washed this morning. Which is used when the words that follow aren’t crucial to meaning. • Those dishes, which belonged to my mother, need to be put away. Who is a subject; whom is an object. • That is the woman who saw me at the movies. • The detective found the thief whom he’d been seeking.
More rules • 1. Use who and whom to refer to people. • 2. Use that to refer to things, animals, and people, but use who when referring to a specific person. • 3. Use which to refer to things and nonhuman creatures.
