  1. Materials Science Solid Mechanics Processing Microstructure Property & Appl. Xin Wu, Associate ProfessorLaboratory for Materials Processing & ManufacturingDept of Mechanical Engineering, Wayne State University(313)577-3882/xin.wu@wayne.edu=========================================================== Background • PhD in Mat’l Sci.& Eng (U of Michigan’91) • Post-doc & Assistant Res. Scientist in Mech Eng & Appl. Mech. (U of M’92-98) • Assistant and Associate Prof of WSU (99-now) Research Interests • Advanced Materials: lightweight materials and structures (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites), nano-materials, functional materials • Manufacturing processes: forming (stamping, casting, molding, gas forming, superplastic forming), joining (welding, bonding, fastening), machining (cutting, grinding), tooling. , Continuum Mech Manufacture Multi-scale Interdissiplinary Micromechanics

  2. Crashworthiness for Auto Safety Safety design & management – Materials & Manufacturing – Testing Challenge: • Reduce weight vs. improve safety/reliability • Better functions vs. reduced cost • Addressing all sustainability requirements Approaches: • Optimal structural design and design for mfg. • New materials: Most promising ones for better safety, lightweight and low cost: 3rd generation advanced high strength steels (in-situ formed nano bulk material at great strength and low cost), and other light metals (Mg, Al), carbon-reinforced metal matrix composites. • Cost reduction through system approach and integrated manufacturing routes, especially reducing number of parts and mfg tools/steps • May consider 3D additive manufacturing route for optimal auto structures. Starting from components and sub-systems
