Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address • With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and for his orphans, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and a lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations. • 10 days later he is assassinated

  5. 13th Amendment (1st Amendment in 60 years) • Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction • No More slavery!

  6. Freedmen’s Bureau Acts • PROVISIONS: • Education for freedmen • Later- Supervises labor contracts between former slaves and whites • REASON: • Emergency help for freedmen • IMP’T: • Federal gov. trying to assist Former slaves • (Johnson vetoes; Congress overrides)

Civil Rights Act 1866 • PROVISIONS: • Gives “citizenship rights” to everyone born in America • (make and enforce contracts, sue and be sued, give evidence in court, and inherit, purchase, lease, sell, hold, and convey real and personal property) • REASON: • Passed in response to BLACK CODES (southern states passing laws limiting rights of freedmen) • IMP’T: • Major attempt to increase in federal power over states • (Johnson vetoes; Congress overrides)

  8. Reconstruction Act • PROVISIONS: • Abolish southern state governments • Split it up into 5 military districts • REASONS: • Federal government taking control of the South to enforce reform • IMP’T: • Radicals officially take over Reconstruction in the South

  9. 14th amendment • PROVISIONS: • Gives citizenship to anyone born in USA (former slaves) • ****makes Bill of Rights applicable to states****** • Sections 3 & 4- PUNISH THE SOUTH • (Confederate war debt or pension can be honored • No high ranking Confederate can have ANY political position without 2/3 of Congress okaying it) • REASON: • Protect rights of former slaves/ punish the south • IMP’T: • All born in America are citizens • ****Bill of Rights applies to states****

  10. 15th Amendment- Right to vote cannot be denied because of race • PROVISION: • Right to vote cannot be denied based on race • REASON: • Southern states not letting freedmen vote • Historical importance: • Race can’t be an issue
