  2. Graphic Sources • A graphic source can be a picture, diagram, map , chart, graph, or something else that shows information. • They are useful they show lots of information in an easy to use way • Making your own can help you understand what you need to know

  3. A map is a Graphic Source A plant diagram is a Graphic Source

  4. Compare and Contrast • When you compare two things, you tell how they are alike. • When you contrast two things, you tell how they are different.

  5. Compare • Tell what is the same about two or more things. • Oranges and Bananas • You eat both of them. • They are both fruits. • You have to peel both of them.

  6. Contrast • Tell what is different about two or more things. • Bananas are yellow. • Bananas are long. • Bananas don’t have seeds. • Oranges are orange • Oranges are round. • Oranges have seeds

  7. Let’s Practice Example: “What a great story!” my little brother cried. “A six-foot-tall beaver joined a baseball team. He used his huge paddle-shaped tail as a bat. He hit one homerun after another!” “Very interesting,” I told him. “But you know that a real beaver lives in water and is three feet long.” “I know that,” he said, “but it makes a great story.”

  9. Causeand Effect • A cause is what makes something happen. • An effect is what happens. • Sometimes a cause will have more than one effect. • Words such as because, so, and since are clues to causes and effects.

  11. Realism and Fantasy A realistic story tells about something that could happen in real list. A fantasy has some things that could happen and something that could not happen

  18. Context Clues Use to figure out the meaning of a word. Often defines or explains the word. Look in the sentences or paragraph around the word

  19. I just came back from a long journey. I can’t wait to tell everyone about my trip. What is another name for journey?

  21. I used my camera to take lots of pictures. I can’t wait to show everyone my photos. What is another name for photos?

  22. If you said that pictures are photos, you are right.

  23. Fact and Opinion A statement of fact can be proven true or false A statement of opinion is what someone believes or thinks. There may or may not be a good reason to think this way Words that express what someone feels or thinks are clues that a statement is an opinion Clue Words: believe, like, should

  24. Main Idea • Every story or paragraph has a main idea. • The main idea tells you what the story is about. • The main idea maybe the lesson learned or moral of a story. • The main idea is the most important part of a story or paragraph.

  25. Supporting Details • The supporting details are the things that describe the main idea. • These supporting details make the main idea stronger.
