Compare and Contrast • When you compare two things, you tell how they are alike. • When you contrast two things, you tell how they are different.
Compare • Tell what is the same about two or more things. • Oranges and Bananas • You eat both of them. • They are both fruits. • You have to peel both of them.
Contrast • Tell what is different about two or more things. • Bananas are yellow. • Bananas are long. • Bananas don’t have seeds. • Oranges are orange • Oranges are round. • Oranges have seeds
Let’s Practice Example: “What a great story!” my little brother cried. “A six-foot-tall beaver joined a baseball team. He used his huge paddle-shaped tail as a bat. He hit one homerun after another!” “Very interesting,” I told him. “But you know that a real beaver lives in water and is three feet long.” “I know that,” he said, “but it makes a great story.”

Fact and Opinion A statement of fact can be proven true or false A statement of opinion is what someone believes or thinks. There may or may not be a good reason to think this way Words that express what someone feels or thinks are clues that a statement is an opinion Clue Words: believe, like, should
Main Idea • Every story or paragraph has a main idea. • The main idea tells you what the story is about. • The main idea maybe the lesson learned or moral of a story. • The main idea is the most important part of a story or paragraph.
Supporting Details • The supporting details are the things that describe the main idea. • These supporting details make the main idea stronger.
