Warm-up Questions What is a parachute? How does a plane move? How does a parachute move? Have
Many years ago people from a country named Germany were very sad. They did not have enough food to eat.
Many airplane pilots from the United States flew to Germany to drop food from the sky to the hungry people.
One day one of the pilots named Hal saw children standing at the fence around the airport. Hal walked over to them. The children thanked him for bringing food to their families.
After talking to the children, the pilot realized that the children had not had any candy to eat in months.
He searched his pockets for something to give them, but all he found was two pieces of gum. Hal expected that with so many children and only two pieces of candy that the children would fight and not want to share the gum.
However, the children carefully broke the gum in small pieces so that as many of them as possible could share the treat. Because the children were so thankful and so willing to share, Hal wanted to help them get more candy.
He told them that the next time he flew his airplane to Germany, he would wiggle his wings and would drop something just for them.
Hal went back to the United States and attached pieces of candy to parachutes made of handkerchiefs.
.The next time that Hal flew to Germany, he wiggled his wings as he flew over the country to remind the children of the treat. Then, he dropped all of the candy attached to parachutes to the children below.
Hal dropped candy to the children every time he flew over Germany for several weeks. Hal dropped more than 23 tons of candy to the children or enough candy to fill 5 elephants!
Because Hal wiggled his wings each time before dropping candy to the children, they nicknamed him Uncle Wiggle Wings.
