  2. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project - Why? Students at The Quay School are the most vulnerable group within The Borough of Poole and need sustained support as they make the transition to Post 16. They include students who have been permanently excluded due to behavioural issues or are at risk of exclusion, young mothers and those who have emotional mental health issues. Our Year 11 destinations data is positive but retention rates are low In addition, we have identified a high percentage of vulnerable pupils within Carter Community School, our partnership school Provision for students across Poole is good if you are able to follow a level 3 (A-level or equivalent) programme, but there is limited choice at level 1 & 2 for this most vulnerable and challenging group

  3. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – What? Employ and train an IAG Mentor to provide appropriate support & guidance for these disadvantaged young people Provide professional development for key staff with industry competence to support & deliver Level 2 + programmes Alongside this, raise funds for the provision of realistic working environments essential for the delivery of vocational courses leading to employment & progression.

  4. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – How? IAG Mentor Brief Provide IAG across the school for full and part time students Develop a network of employers offering work placements / apprenticeships appropriate to the needs of our students Ensure students on vocational pathways are able to access work experience placements linked to their courses Provided targeted support for the college / training / employment application process Maintain the support for all students for at least 12 months after leaving The Quay School

  5. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – How? Professional Development Instructors without QTS follow 2 year Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) Instructors delivering C&G programmes achieve Assessor Award Instructors delivering BTec programmes achieve Internal Verifier status All instructors have recognised ‘industry competence’ or its equivalent

  6. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – Progress? All KS4 students have completed a Personal Assessment and ILP Students on the Foundation Learning programme undertake extended work experience linked to their chosen pathway – Yr 11 students: 60% have a placement & 40% are awaiting confirmation 100%students following our formal pathway have applications in place for either Further Education places and/or apprenticeships for September All last year leavers have all been contacted by our Mentor and IAG support offered. Our IAG Mentor has developed new partnerships which are opening up new opportunities for work experience and apprenticeships in industries ranging from hospitality and catering to childcare and building maintenance.

The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – Progress? 3 staff enrolled on DTLLS course at Weymouth College Impact in practice already clear from lesson observations, planning audits & reflective practice Assessor award training arranged BTec Verifier training in progress Support in place for all staff to attain industry competence by July 2012 New facilities open April 2012

  8. The Harbourside Quay to Success Project – Next Steps? Further develop & extend relationships with employers . Procedures and processes for IAG, transition and tracking are now in place. Having prioritised year 11 students we are now rolling out the programme to year 10 students. Employers workshops taking place to inform students about learning routes and progression opportunities in their industry. Workshops for job application skills and selection procedures.
