ReproMaX Fertility Trial Dr. Prien, Dr. Jabara, Lisa Welch, Dr. Sosa February 27, 2009
Background • Texas Tech Device for Improved Semen Collection (TTU-DISC) • Design of the device: limit surface area, concentrate the sample, and provided a buffering agent • The device was found to improve semen parameters in animal trials.
Figure 1. A comparison of normal collection techniques (control) verses the DISC (treatment) in dogs intolerant to traditional collection techniques (infertile). [data presented at: 1) D. Johnson and S.D. Prien: A Novel Collection Technique for Improvement of Semen Quality. Society for Gynecologic Investigation Annual Meetings, Toronto, Canada, March, 2001 and 2) D.L. Johnson and S.D. Prien. “Improving semen quality through collection modification.” 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Seattle, WA, October, 2002.
TTU-DISC to the ReproMaX • Estimated one in seven couples in U.S. have difficulties conceiving. • Twenty percent of the time infertility linked to female, 25% of the time infertility linked to the male, 55% of the time factors associated with both partners, or, unknown. • Three main issues with male associated infertility: 1. count, 2. motility, 3. morphology
Figure 6. Final design of the ReproMaX filed with the US Patent Office 3/31/2006 (provisional patent # 60/744,086).
Proposed Experiment • Human trials comparing the ReproMaX to the standard collection containers will take place. • Samples will be collected and tested for: standard semen parameters, acrosome reactions, lipid peroxidation, evaluation of plasma and mitochondrial membranes, assessment of sperm chromatin structure, and biocompatibility trials.
