Our prayer… Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen. St. Monica (331-387) Feast day: Aug. 27 St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Feast day: Aug. 28
The Recapitulation • Our working definition of prayer • “Prayer is the vital and personal relationship with the living and true God” • Different ways that relationship can manifest itself. • St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) • The founder of the Society of Jesus, i.e., the Jesuits.
Why does this portrait of someone who lived in the 4th and 5 centuries contain objects that existed long before and long after his life? Jan van Eyck, St. Jerome in His Study (1442); Detroit, MI.
Symbols • Symbols do more than give us information; they lead into other worlds of meaning, they open up more and deeper conversations. • Think about the painting of Jerome and the layers of conversation that its symbols can introduce: • What did Jerome have in his study… • What does it mean to be a learned person… • Can someone who believes in God be a learned person… • How do faith (what I believe) and reason (what I can think through) relate to one another…
For homework • Read Exodus 3:1-7 • Read Dei Verbum, Chapter 1. • NOTE! • The links to both of these pieces of text are available on my homework page under “weblinks.” • Our quiz tomorrow…if we have one…will cover only the story from Exodus…but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read the chapter from Dei Verbum.
