  1. Steps for Writing a STAAR Persuasive Essay Rockwall-Heath High School English II

  2. STEP #1 READ the prompt. Circle the most important word in the prompt (the subject). Today, there are more and more reality shows on television. Do these shows make good television? Why or Why not?

  3. STEP #2 Brainstorm a list of reasons for and against the issue or position. Reality shows do not make good TV: Reality shows make good TV:

  4. STEP #3 Choose the position you want to argue. Either “Yes, reality shows make good TV” OR “No, reality shows do not make good TV.”

  5. STEP #4 Choose the two “reasons” for which you can write the best argument. --One “reason” for each body paragraph

  6. STEP #5 Before you write anything else, focus on answering the prompt by writing a position statement, also known as a thesis statement. Rearrange words from the prompt into a statement, then follow it with “because” and then add two reasons. (This is the road map for the rest of your essay!) Reality shows do not make good television because (broad reason 1) and (broad reason 2)

STEP #6 Now go back and create the introductory paragraph and plug the thesis statement into the end. • The first sentence is the “hook.” Re-read the information before the prompt to find the general subject. Think general and broad. How does this topic affect “the world” or “life”? Question what would happen “without”… • --What would the world be like without reality television? • The second sentence must “draw a line” from the hook to the thesis. Think of what the two have in common, which is usually the end of the hook. • --While reality television can be entertaining at times, the overall impression seems to be of a dumbed down society. • Put the three sentences together to make the Intro Paragraph.

  10. STEP #7 Brainstorm examples to go along with your “reasons” --One “reason” for each body paragraph --One example to back it up R-O-S-E Technique

  11. Body Paragraph 1 Topic Sentence: <<Reason 1>>. The truth is, reality television is giving a false sense of reality to kids across America.

  12. Commentary/explanation/example for <<Reason 1>>: • For example, imagine that a little girl grows up watching The Bachelor and then truly believes that romance is a whirlwind of group dates. Her reality then becomes what she has seen. She may truly believe that love can only exist after extravagant dates and over-the-top wining and dining. And, as most of us know, this is not usually the reality of getting to know someone and falling in love.

  13. Body Paragraph 2 Topic sentence: <<Reason 2>>. And Commentary for Reason 2 You may want to counter argue here… Reality shows such as American Idol and The Voice give talented people the chance to become a star. Unfortunately, however, these same shows also poke fun at those less talented individuals. THEN move into your second reason. The bottom line is reality television makes society look stupid. Popular shows such as Honey Boo Boo and even Duck Dynasty gain their viewers by making fun of their culture.
