Environment • The environment is the total of all conditions, objects, places, and people that are around you. • Natural Environment- land, water, trees, solar energy, climate, topography
Environment • Constructed Environment- natural env. has been changed by human effort • Behavioral Environment- found wherever people interact • A setting for the family unit • Includes human qualities and feelings • Positive or negative
Technological • Technology is a scientific method of achieving a particular purpose. • Early- tools and materials to manipulate resources • Industrialization- factory made items, climate control • High-tech Era- energy efficient, AV equip, computers • CADD- computer-aided drafting and design

Objective • 1.02 Summarize factors to consider when choosing a place to live.
Governmental • Government at all levels influences housing (federal, state, local) • Legislation- began during colonial times! • 1649- houses built of brick or stone to prevent fires • 1900’s- laws to control land use, prevent overcrowding, and encourage beautification • Today: • Housing Standards- quality • Building Codes- materials and methods • Zoning Regulations- controls land use
Governmental • Funding • Buying/selling mortgages • Loans • Ensures affordable housing • Rent supplements • Supports organizations for the homeless • 3 million (or more) homeless in the US! • Environmental Protection • Agencies responsible for both natural and constructed environments
Activities • Textbook Activity (15 min): • Read pages 40-52 in the “Homes and Interiors” Textbook and answer the questions on the worksheet. • Research Activity (30 min): • Using the computers, complete the “Housing and Government” Sheet • Table 1 HUD, FHA • Table 2 Building Codes • Table 3 Zoning Regulations • Table 4 EPA • Table 5 CPSC/ADA • Both activities should be glued into notebooks.
