  2. What is a career assessment? A career assessment is a tool that can be used to help students make effective career decisions. Career assessments help students identify common career patterns related to interests, skills, values and personalities.

  3. Myths “A career assessment will tell me exactly what occupation I should pursue.” “I took an assessment in high school. I don’t need to take another one.” “A career assessment or counselor can tell me what to do with my life.”

  4. More on Myths • No assessment can tell you what your career should be. What an assessment can do is help you narrow your search and consider options you may not have previously considered. • Career planning should begin in high school and continue into your college years. Career options should be reevaluated as you mature.

  5. Assessments We Offer Strong Interest Inventory Will measure your interests in a broad range of occupations, work activities, leisure activities, and school subjects. By taking the Strong, you can obtain information that can help you begin to identify careers that may relate to your areas of interests. Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) A widely used personality instrument designed to help you understand yourself and your natural preferences. There’s a strong correlation between personality type and job satisfaction. This assessment will help you identify careers that may be a good fit. Career Occupational Preference System (COPS) A pencil-and-paper assessment consisting of a comprehensive battery of tests that includes an interest inventory, a set of abilities tests, and a values inventory. This battery is designed to help you conduct a thorough self-analysis and then relate your findings to the work world.

  6. Assessment Fees • There is a fee of $25 for each assessment. You can charge the fees to your fee bill or pay by cash, check or credit card.

  7. More Career-Planning Tools • Career Discovery is a free assessment designed to assist you in making effective decisions about careers and personality preferences. • FOCUS2 is a self-paced, online career and education planning tool for use by college students. This assessment is free to LSU students.
