  2. What is BYOD? ● Access to the Internet at school. ● BYOD awards the same set of permissions as if you are on a school computer. ● Internet usage on the BYOD network is still monitored, as it is on a regular school computer. #It’sFinallyHere!

Access ●To be granted access, students must confirm they accept the terms and conditions of the GCPSAUP (Acceptable Use Policy). ●Users agree to uphold the contents of the AUP as well as the Student Code of Conduct on their own student-owned devices while on school property. ●GCPS will filter all content for users connected to the GCPS network at school. #BeResponsible

  4. AUP Summary ●By signing this form, the school and parents agree that this device may only be used at school to support specific teaching and learning processes, including times and locations where students may not be directly supervised by school personnel. #It’sUpToTheTeacher

  6. Theft, Loss or Damage ●The owner is responsible for ensuring that the device is safe and secure. ●GCPS is not responsible for any maintenance, damage, theft, usage or usage charges, or loss of this non-school-district equipment. #You’reInCharge

  9. Do I Need to Register My Device? YES ●When you fill out the AUP form, you will provide the serial number of your device(s). This registers your device.

  10. How do I log in to the BYOD network? Use the same login you use for a school computer ● Once you are authenticated, you will receive filtered access to the Internet under RUP guidelines.

  11. ●While on your wireless device, go to your connections and choose the “Student” connection. Then you will be prompted to enter your school login code and password. Use your network login.

  12. Can I access Facebook/Twitter/ Instagram/YouTube etc on my phone? NO ●Connectivity to the wireless network is just like connecting to the district network when it comes to sites you can access. ●Even though you are using your own personal device, you must comply with GCPS guidelines and the Acceptable Use Policy.

  13. Can I use my phone to play games and text my friends during class? NO ●BYOD should be used for educational purposes only.

  14. So what CAN I use my device for? With BYOD, Technology is a tool, not a learning outcome or a source of entertainment.

  15. Can I print from my device to school printers? NO ●If you need to print, it is recommended that you e-mail the document to yourself as an attachment and then open it from a district-owned device with teacher supervision. When our online classrooms are available, you may submit to dropboxes through your portal.

  16. Can I save my work to the school network? NO ●Storage space is NOT available to students through the GCPS Wi-Fi network for personally owned devices. ●Use your device’s storage options or personal Internet storage space (such as your online locker once our online classrooms are available).

  17. Will I be able to charge my device at school? NO ● Presently, no facilities are dedicated to charging personal devices, with a limited number of outlets available in any given space. Students should make it a point to charge their technology prior to coming to school each day.

  18. What do I do if my device is damaged or stolen? ●Even though you are TOTALLY responsible for keeping your personal device safe and secure, any time there is theft or damage, you should notify your teacher or the administration. GCPS is not liable or responsible for any theft, damage, or loss of any non-district device or the information on any such device.

  19. I have a data plan from an outside provider on my device that allows Internet access without the GCPS network. Is this allowable? NO ●BYOD is the ONLY allowable network on personal devices. Students should not access the Internet through any cellular data provider while on school premises.

  20. What if I can’t get my device working on BYOD? ●GCPS employees are not trained to troubleshoot the many types of personal devices that students may bring. ●Refer to your owner’s manual, the internet, or a peer with the same device to help you troubleshoot.

  21. Can I share my login with my friends? NO! ● The same rules apply for a school computer (i.e. you cannot share your username and password with anyone). If you share your login with anyone, then your account will be disabled. #wecareifyoushare

  22. When Can I Use My Device? ●Remember, devices can only be used for educational purposes. ●You may use your device when your teacher says you can. Your teacher may use signs such as these: NO! YES!

  23. Some Helpful Tips

  24. Charge your device before coming to school. Crews does not have charging stations available.

  25. Keep your phone in airplane mode when you are not using it to preserve your battery life.

  26. Download a free QR-reader app in order to scan QR codes in classes and the media center.

  27. The Library now has e-Books! Access them from your smartphone, tablet, or computer!
