  1. Globalizing the NBA: The Risk of Expansion

  2. David Stern’s Approach • David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, wishes to expand the NBA into Europe by establishing professional teams overseas that will compete with 30 teams that are already in place in the United States.

  3. David Stern and the NBA Available market overseas Possibility of strengthening competition Available market for player’s contracts Eliminates worry of losing players to Euro-league in place now Fans Around the World Chance to become involved in the NBA experience Benefit from charities performed by the NBA Economy may benefit by adding professional venues Advantages of Expanding the NBA

  4. David Stern and the NBA The risk that the NBA does not become as popular as it is here in the states Losing fan base of those who do not agree with the expansion Long plane rides and geographical issues make traveling from game to game a huge issue Fans Around the World Will pretty much eliminate the professional leagues in place as of now Will most definitely change the way the game is played: rules, policies, traveling, concepts, execution, etc. Disadvantages of Expanding the NBA

  5. Possibility of two “Super-Leagues” • Strengthening the Euro-league in place now so that it can compete with the NBA • Deciding on one set of rules that all players around the world will follow • Allow both leagues to go through their regular seasons then compete against each other at the end of the year for title of being the best in the world

  6. In My Perfect World…. • David Stern gets fired as commissioner and I take his place • As the commissioner of the NBA I work hand in hand with the Euro-League and establish two dominant leagues that continually compete for the world’s best talent and the title of playing in the best league in the world.
