Te Hau Mihi Ata Mauri Holders Hui 24 September 2008
Key components of the first wananga • Group dynamics • Wananga re/structure and participant responses • Identity • Learned vs Lived experiences
Group dynamics • Two distinct knowledge groups – matauranga Maori and science • All Maori • Interpersonal dynamics • Intragroup dynamics • Gender dynamics • Age dynamics • Knowledge dynamics
Wananga re/structure and participant responses • Organised vs Disorganised – Perceptions of • People’s ability to adapt to changes in the programme – how does this reflect in their ability to accept or acknowledge alternative knowledge systems? • People’s un/willingness to be shepherded, told what to do and who to do it with!
Identity • What do I as an individual bring to this wananga? • From whose knowledge system am I positioned? • How do I or can I interact with people from within my knowledge system and from the ‘other’ knowledge system? • How much of my training influences or has influenced how I am expressing myself? • How does my lack of/ability to speak te reo and/or understand Maori cultural practices limit or enhance my participation?
Learned vs Lived experiences • How much are we influenced by our upbringing in the process of engaging in dialogue? • To what extent do we defer to our training (academic or professional) when engaging in dialogue? • Is one more important than the other in the science/matauranga Maori dichotomy?
