Before 2012 • Ambulance companies regarded as ‘cowboys’, not without some justification; • Allowed to transport patients without any controls or supervision; • The IAA never existed; • Free-for-all • Today 2 years later • Recognized by Government; • Accepted by the public healthcare establishment • Regulated by CQC on the same basis as NHS Ambulance Trusts; • Responsible for more than 50% of all NHS hospital transfers; • Set to have an important role in the Keogh reforms of emergency and urgent care services.   10. “Private ambulances— from nowhere to Government recognition in two years” “The birth and subsequent growing influence of the IAA can be traced back to the Government’s decision to regulate private ambulance companies by the Care Quality Commission in April 2011. The regulations created for the first time a level playing field between the private sector and the NHS ambulance Trusts and the need became apparent for a professionally managed not for profit organisation which recognised the important benefits of regulation and would work with the regulators, not fight them.” The Rise of Private Ambulances Comment March 2014 Issue Ambition 2014 Olympia, London, 29 April
