War Ends, Cold War Begins • Yalta Conference (FDR, Churchill, Stalin) • 2/1945 • Disagreements over reparations, self-determination • USSR promised to declare war on Japan • Potsdam Conference (Truman, Churchill, Stalin) • Divided Germany/Berlin • Eastern Europe under Communist control • Division of world into communist v. non-communist

  4. A Changed World • Civil war in China resumes • Japan – occupation organized by Gen. MacArthur • New constitution • Limited military • Women’s suffrage • Increased democracy • Est. plan for rebuilding • Declining imperialism (though not overnight)

International Efforts • GATT – General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (1948) • UN - 4/1945 • General Assembly – all members have one vote • Security Council – 5 permanent members (US, USSR, CHN, FRA, GB) with veto power, 10 rotating members • Universal Declaration of Human Rights • War Crimes Trials • Nuremberg + hundreds of individual trials • 1000’s of trials for Japanese war criminals for atrocities in POW camps, China, Korea, SE Asia, Bataan Death March
