Mrs. LewisConceptual Physics, Physics, AP Physics, Engineering I have a Bachelors of Science in Physics & Mathematics; this is my 22nd year at DHSphone number: 833-3300 x7096e-mail**: LewisKatina@dublinusd.net
Back-To-School Nighttopics to be covered: • basic physics curriculum content • homework & experiment portfolios • learning & study skills for college • technology • college requirements & tests • Physics day at Great America
curriculum content: • all students have a copy of the syllabus in their binders, as well as the California State Physics Standards • Physics textbook = Glencoe-McGraw-Hill Physics • other topics after the STAR test in May include Astronomy & Nuclear & Modern Physics • We try to make Physics intrinsically interesting by having it relate to real life as much as possible…..
homework & experiment portfolios: • Rigorous schedule predetermined by Ca State curriculum - California State Standards in Physics • homework every night to guarantee learning of all topics on the STAR test (in May) • also covered are colleges’ & admission tests’ recommendations of material (i.e.: SAT II) • “UC lab-based” means an extensive portfolio of Experimental work, typically one conducted per unit, and requiring a high mastery of computer skills
learning & study skills for college: • Become a “life-long learner” • Study Skills • how to learn from reading a textbook or handout, at times with little or no additional help • how to be responsible for one’s own learning (we do HW to learn, not just to get it done!) • how to get the most out of studying by committing oneself to it • Time Management • how to deal with a rigorous schedule & balance life’s other needs • how to be and stay organized
technology: • graphing calculators & Navigators • computers • Microsoft Word & Excel • PowerPoint & Paint • Internet - research • email & teacher webpages • simulation software • Interactive Physics • Constructing Physics Understanding • science probeware
college requirements & tests: • UC/CalState: 2 years of a “lab science”, preferably four years • one SAT II in science recommended • chemistry is usually the best to take now • Jr’s could take physics next fall • STAR test in May for Junior’s • Note - We also take our final in May, and then do units on Astronomy & Nuclear/Modern Physics in June
Donations • Money (if your family can afford it) • The signed & returned letter was due today, but I will still take them tomorrow. • AAA, 9 –volt, D batteries • Copy Paper • Paper towels, Kleenex • Masking tape, Scotch tape, Glue Sticks, Glue • Staplers / staples • Red Pens • Rulers, Scissors • Colored Pencils, crayons, white-board pens
Physics Day at Great America • usually 3rd Friday in May • park closed to the general public • physics experiments done at park • (some on the rides) • only students with good grades and good attendance will be invited to go • cost about forty dollars
A little about me • This is my 22nd year at DHS. • This summer I also celebrated my 22nd anniversary with my husband. • I have 2 children (11 and 14) who love soccer – almost as much as they love science! • I enjoy camping, reading science fiction, knitting, gardening, and spending time with my children!
