Why a Vehicle Management safety code? • The movement of cars, bicycles, delivery vans, and fork lift trucks on larger STFC sites presents real hazards for both drivers & pedestrians. • The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations, 1992, requires the safe separation of pedestrians and vehicles on sites, and especially where vehicles enter buildings. • Site Vehicle Transport risk assessments are a requirement of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999.
Basic requirements • Site Estate managers should ensure that a Site Vehicle Transport risk assessment is in place and maintained. • Where vehicles must enter buildings, managers should ensure that they do so without endangering the safety of people within the building. • Where a large project may block or impede pedestrian or traffic routes, then alternative measures to ensure safe movement of people and free access for Emergency Vehicles should be put in place. • The Highway Code should be followed at all times on STFC sites. • Report defects – potholes etc. • Pedestrians should use marked routes where possible.
