Where are we? Where do we need to be? • Reduced the proportion of people living on less than $1.25 per day from 50 to 22 per cent • Reduced the proportion of under-5 children underweight from 35 to 24 per cent, but it is still slow
Where are we? Where do we need to be? Progress in reducing the proportion of under-5 children underweight • Reducing child malnutrition: • 14 countries likely to miss target (slow, no progress or regressing) • Off-track countries will meet target if progress accelerated by less than 2 percentage points per year Source: Staff calculations based on the United Nations MDG database.

What are the challenges? • Because of the region’s large population it is also home to a high proportion of the developing world’s deprived people • Address the social determinants • Empowerment of women • Provide social protection • Create jobs • Raise agricultural production • Implement feeding programs
What can we do/media do? • Role of media, as a key development actor • Create channels to keep all stakeholders meaningfully engaged in the development process • Create mechanisms through which the voice of most marginalized are being heard
