  2. Vilnius is our capital. It was first mentioned in 1323.

  3. The heart of Vilnius is Gediminas Castle.

  4. The castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis and around 1409 was completed by his son Vytautas the Great.

  5. Anykščiai (population 12 000) lies on the Šventoji river, the longest river in Lithuania.

  6. There is a legend about the Puntukas stone, a famous stone in Lithuania. According to this legend, the devil wanted to destroy the church by dropping a stone on it. However, crowing of a rooster prevented this happening and the stone fell away from the church

  7. Lithuania has around 99 km of sandy coastlineof which only about 38 km face the open Baltic Sea.

  8. The rest of the coast is sheltered by the sandy dunes of the Curonian Spit.
