Is Higher Education Ready to Commit to Community Engagement? Calling the Question: Nancy L. Zimpher, President, University of CincinnatiDecember 8, 2005
I have this growing conviction that what is needed [for higher education] is not just more programs, but a larger purpose, a larger sense of mission, a larger clarity of direction in the nation’s life. Not Necessarily A New Idea “ ” Ernest Boyer (1994)
Founded: 1985 Today: 5 million students More than 950 public and private two- and four-year colleges and universities
Kellogg Commission: Renewing the Covenant, 2000 “It (the transformed university) will be a new kind of public institution, one that is as much a first-rate research university, one that provides access to success to much more diverse student population as easily as it reaches out to engage the larger community.”
Our goal in calling the question is nothing less than the transformation of our nation’s colleges and universities. We believe engagement is the best hope for the future of higher education. “ ” Wingspread Statement 2004, Calling the Question
