So, what is the relationship between mass and volume? • DENSITY! • How much “stuff” is packed into a given space. • It’s the “mass per volume”
So, what is density? • Something with a large density…. • has a lot of mass contained in a unit volume • Something with a small density…. • has less mass contained in a unit volume Which suitcase has a greater density? Why?
Study the diagrams above. Assume the particles are uniformly distributed throughout each object, and particles of the same size have the same mass. In the table below show how the masses, volumes, and densities compare by adding the symbol <, > or=to the statement in the second column. Mass: A ______ B Volume: A ______B Density: A ______B
What is Density? • Density is a characteristic property of matter. • It will always be the same for a kind of matter regardless of shape or size. • Density is to a specific type of metal like… • Fingerprint is to specific person
Equation • Density is the ratio of mass to volume. • That means you DIVIDE the mass of your object by the volume. • Density = mass volume Units: g/cm3 m d v g/cm3 OR g/mL
Questions Mickey, a student, made the following statement: “Large objects always have more mass than small objects.” Do you agree or disagree with Mickey? Why? Minnie, another student, made this statement: “Objects made of steel or concrete always have more mass than objects made of plastic or Styrofoam.” Do you agree or disagree? Why?
(Sample Problem) • A 13.0 gram piece of aluminum has a volume of 4.8 cm3. What is the density of the aluminum? • 13 g/4.8 cm3 = 2.7 g/cm3 • Say “Two point seven grams per cubic centimeter.”
Bell Ringer • A graduated cylinder is filled with 27.21 mL of water. A 13.0 gram piece of solid is placed into the graduated cylinder causing the water to rise to 32.01 mL. • What is the density of the solid? • Using IPS pg 58, identify the solid.
