Layers of the Atmosphere/Density GUIDED NOTES

Layers of the Atmosphere/Density GUIDED NOTES. Cornell notes in your notebook. Important Terms!. Volume- the amount of space an object takes up. Example: the size of a room. Mass- the amount of “stuff” something has in it. Example: the amount of people in a room. What is Density?.

  1. Layers of the Atmosphere/DensityGUIDED NOTES Cornell notes in your notebook

  2. Important Terms! Volume- the amount of space an object takes up. Example: the size of a room Mass- the amount of “stuff” something has in it. Example: the amount of people in a room

  3. What is Density? Density • How thick or thin something is… • It’s the amount of mass in a given volume of a substance…density= mass/ volume aka d = m/v • Example: how crowded the room is • Size does not change density…. More dense Less dense

  4. DEMO: Coke vs. Diet Coke Which is more dense? Why?

  5. Which plane is flying at the highest altitude? Which plane is flying through air with the greatest density? Highest altitude Greatest Density

  6. Makeup of Gases in the Atmosphere * Most of Earth’s atmosphere is not made up of oxygen. It’s mostly made of nitrogen. This is good because actually, with too much oxygen we would all die. Our insides would start to “rust!”

  7. D.E.A.R Unpack, and read silently. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats

  8. Warm Up: Answer the following questions • What are the most engaging classes? Least engaging? Why? • What should teachers do more of? Less of? Why? • What helps you learn best? • What hinders your learning?

  9. Layers of The Atmosphere-Day 2 • Objective:I will create a foldable describing the 5 layers of the atmosphere to differentiate between each of them. • HW: Earth’s Atmosphere WS Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats

  10. Review notes!!!

  11. Mass… • Volume… • Density……

  12. WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE? Atmosphere- blanket of gases surrounding Earth

  13. What is altitude? altitude is how high above the earth

  14. Nitrogen makes up what percentage of air? • About 78%

  15. What is the second most common gas in the air? • Oxygen 21%

  16. Exosphere Thermosphere Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere EXOSPHERE The Layers of the Atmosphere

  17. Lies next to the Earth’s surface • Densest layer • Almost all gases, pollution and life found here • Layer where we live • Layer where weather occurs EXOSPHERE Troposphere The Layers of the Atmosphere

  18. Stratosphere EXOSPHERE • Air is very thin • There is almost no moisture in this layer so it’s very dry • Ozone layer • Airplanes fly here The Layers of the Atmosphere

  19. Coldest layer • As altitude increases, temperature decreases • Very windy EXOSPHERE Mesosphere The Layers of the Atmosphere

  20. Contains the ionosphere where electricity makes gases light up = The Northern and Southern Lights EXOSPHERE The Layers of the Atmosphere Thermosphere Very high temperature (BUT IT IS NOT HOT).

  21. Exosphere EXOSPHERE The Layers of the Atmosphere • EXO= exit, outer • satellites This is outer space!

  22. Foldable • Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half like a hamburger. • Fold it in half again. • Fold it like a brochure. • Fill in your notes. • Cut the creases….

  23. REVIEW 1. Layer of the atmosphere with the lowest altitude Troposphere 2. Layer of the atmosphere where satellites float around Exosphere 3. Layer of the atmosphere that has a high temperature but is not very hot. Why? 4. Layer of the atmosphere that is very windy and has the coldest temperature 5. Layer of the atmosphere that we live in 6. Layer of the atmosphere where the air is very thin and dry 7. What is Earth’s atmosphere mostly made of?
