Postmodernism • There are 4 main features of Postmodernism. - Iconoclasm: decolonizes cultural standards. - Groundless: employs flat, media-like images. - Formlessness: avoids shaping power of metaphors and other literary types. - Populism: literary language; avoids seriousness and responsibility. • Started sometime in the 40’s. • Peaked in the 60’s. • Didn’t really deal with nature, but with people’s emotions.
Postmodernism Con’t • Why is Postmodernism post? -It denies the existence of any ultimate principles. - It lacks the optimism of there being a scientific, philosophical, or religious truth. • Modernism was grounded in the beliefs of the Enlightenment. • Reaction to the modernist time, referring to the lack of artistic, intellectual, or cultural thought or organized principle. • Contains a broad range of concepts and ideas.
Postmodernism: the effect of WWII. Result of WWII More inquisitive in their views. Postmodernism was a very abstract way of thinking.
Purpose….Or was there one? Purpose? The purpose for postmodernism was to question science and religion of the time.
J. H. Prynne: postmodernism spanned around the world Shows that the movement wasn’t restricted to America. Peaked in the 60’s Wrote pieces like Force of Circumstance and White Stones.
