Before PostModernism Modernism • Modernism focuses on Rationalism and believing on what you can see and can prove, but stays away from “Realism.” • Somewhat ignorance to the magical, mystical, and spiritual. • The Industrial Revolution (1760 – 1840) played a large part in the development of Modernism, mainly because Modernism was a revolt to the IR. • Modernism was a way of looking at the world in terms of “We are going to progress, and rely on facts, science, discovery, and research.”
PostModernism • Approximately 1960’s; after World War II • Carried on the ideas of Modernism • “Enlightenment” and “Emancipation” – Knowing something sets you free. (Emphasis on Rationalization) • Is there more to life than which we can prove? • The idea of Trust. Can we trust the ideas that were given to us, either by government, politicians, etc. Largely due to The World Wars. People lost faith in society.
PostModernism Cont’d • The rejection of “The system” and the rejection of a fixed culture. • The importance of choice. “Have what you like” in terms of taste. • No progress left to happen, almost retro. • "Modernism was not simply a style: but more of an attitude, a determination to break with the past and free the architect from the stifling rules of convention and etiquette." • Duchamp’s Fountain (Modernism/Postmodernism Statement)
3 Senses of postmodernism • As a “cultural dominant” defining a distinct historical era. • A philosophical concept marking the end of the ideals of the Enlightenment. • An art historical concept defining a style of expression.
Postmodernism style • Subjective features: • Schizo-culture: unified cogito replaced by a decentered , fluid, “schizophrenic” mentality. • Waning of affect and the experience of intensities. • The weakening of a sense of history
