  2. Facts There are approximately 1,500 active volcanoes, not counting undersea volcanoes. Of these, only about 20-30 erupt in any one year The eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980 had 500 times the power of an atomic bomb The largest volcano found in the solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars The largest on earth is Mauna Loa located in Hawaii
  3. Where Volcanoes are Located Most are found around the Pacific Ocean This part of the world is called the ring of fire The ring of fire is just a bunch of volcanoes surrounding the Pacific Ocean Hawaii is in the middle of the ring of fire

  5. Why Volcanoes Erupt? First rocks melt deep within the earth to form magma Then since its lighter than the solid rocks around it, it rises up Eventually some of the magma pushes through vents and fissures in the Earth's surface This is how a eruption occurs
  6. Eruptions The explosions vary depending on the type of magma There are two types one is running magma, it won’t explode but it leaks out and moves slowly. It doesn’t explode since it’s easier for gases to escape it The other is thinker and this type of magma doesn’t allow gases to escape and this builds up pressure which leads to an explosion

Volcanoes and Gas Laws In the study of Volcanology the ideal gas law that is used is Combined Law Before a volcano erupts the pressure inside increases when the pressure increases so does the temperature inside The empty space in the volcano is the volume So when magma rises because of pressure not allowing gases to escape the empty space decreases until the volcano erupts So an increase in temperature and pressure = a decrease in volume
