SOME OBSERVATIONS • Big Deal Made of Mission Canyon in Incident and Group Briefings. • Evacuations in Place. Numerous Residents Defied. • Hundreds of Resources Assigned to Defensive Structure Protection. • Relatively Few Resources Assigned to Offensive Fire Attack. • Direction/Strong Inference to Minimize Structure Prep Actions Unless Fire Imminent. • Group Resources Intermixed With Divisional Resources. • Adjoining Type III Strike Team Pulled Out of Key Area at Noon.
LESSONS LEARNED/REINFORCED • Do not Allow Crews to Chase Spot Fires Associated With Intensified Fire Behavior or an Approaching Fire Front. The Closer the Fire, The Tighter the Crew. • Structure Prep Activities Greatly Increase Effectiveness and Reduce Risk. Commit to It and Do It Early When and Where You Can. • Keep Your Trainee and Staff Assistant Close. They Need To Know to Watch You! • Staying Put is a Good Thing. • Expect to be on Your Own. • Time and Timing are BIG!!
