Bonus Pastor Catholic College FACTS • Mixed 11-16 comprehensive school based in Lewisham • Voluntary aided within the Diocese of Southwark • 95% of students are Baptised and practising members of the Catholic Church • 750 students on roll • The school has 60% boys, 40% girls Bonus Pastor Catholic College

London Borough of Lewisham FACTS • Lewisham had the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the UK and Europe. • Sexual transmitted infections (STI’s) in Lewisham were the highest in Europe in particular Chlamydia. • National concern about the increasing levels of alcohol consumption amongst young people in the UK. Sexual Relationship Education: Getting it started • Needs Analysis – questionnaire to KS4 Students on Sexual Relationship Education (SRE) within the school • Initial meeting between Headteacher, and Lewisham Primary Care Trust (LPCT) Specialist Outreach team • Set up meeting with parents to discuss, inform them about workshops and gain their permission Bonus Pastor Catholic College

Sexual Relationship Education: What does it involve • Workshops aimed at KS4 pupils – mainly Year 10 • Six weekly sessions • Taught single sexed groups • Student led – based on the needs of a particular group • Topics covering: relationships, marriage and family life, Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) contraception, alcohol, drugs and teenage pregnancy • Activities: pair work, group work, discussions, role play, specialist guest speakers Bonus Pastor Catholic College

  6. Sexual Health Education: Outcomes • Young people more confident in seeking advice from key members of staff within the school • Reduction in teenage pregnancy • Increased levels of young people accessing local clinics for advice. Bonus Pastor Catholic College

Sexual Relationship Education: Moving On • Internal referrals to Mentoring and Learning Support Unit • LPCT specialist outreach team working with the RE department at KS3 • Metro Team – sessions on relationships and homophobic bullying • Victim Support – provide counselling to students • Turning Point – ACAPs – adviceon drugs and alcohol Bonus Pastor Catholic College
