When is art Dangerous? • Plato was the first Western philosopher to mention that art can have wrong moral effect on the audience. • This can be dangerous and manipulative • Poetry can be dangerous because it can lead us to sympathize with fictional characters who are morally wrong causing a bad image about what is right and wrong. • While reading or watching a play, the feelings of the character and the audience are the same. • The audience can get the wrong feeling by watching violent plays affecting the way they act.
Why the Sopranos? • It is easier to identify with the characters • Characters are portrayed deeply in intimate ways • Tony Sopranos feeling are portrayed very well • The audience receive a complete view of the characters as a human being. • Tony Soprano also has a good side, he tries to be a good father in his own way and cares a lot for his close friends. • Even though Tony Soprano is a evil, vicious and morally bankrupt everybody gets to like him.
Is it Morally wrong to watch the Sopranos? • Identifying with the Character can be wrong because it can be violent and Morally wrong. • It can give the audience a bad image of what is right and wrong. • Not all characters in the Movie are bad.
