  5. New Wake Up! NYC Program • Mayor’s Initiative on Chronic Absenteeism • receive phone calls through School Messenger • pre-recorded by notable celebrities and have a peppy and encouraging tone • can be programmed to go to student’s home or cell phone

NYC files • Post Poster including School Name and Contact Person • Hand Out Flyers • Have attendance and guidance personnel target certain students who are prone to lateness or absence • Check information • Enter information into ATS

School Climate • motivational incentives as part of an overall emphasis on positive school climate • an environment where students feel successful & appreciated • smiles, high fives, compliments, & feedback on a job well done • standards & clear expectations for behavior at arrival, passing periods, as well as in the classroom

  10. Students will come to school if they feel it is an inviting place to be.

  11. Identifying Students • RPAC: students who have increased their attendance percentage since last month • RPAL: students with perfect attendance • RGAR & RSCA: compare attendance percentage by official class or grade level

Incentives for Students • recognition breakfasts for students & their families • monthly award assemblies • monthly bulletin boards • certificates • partner with local stores for gift certificates, coupons, giveaways, etc. • Principal acknowledgement: PA announcement, lunch with the principal • school trips for students with perfect or improved attendance

More incentives... • attendance “A” letters similar to varsity letters for athletes • extra time in Phys Ed class or extra computer time • attendance banner in cafeteria or auditorium • tickets to movies or special events • school trinkets (i.e. pencils, umbrellas, homework pads, etc.) • enter students into raffles

Funding Sources • AIDP discretionary funds (SAM 57), City Council funds (SAM 62), Targeted Middle School Intervention (SAM 74) , see how these may be used for attendance incentives • Title I: 1% must be set aside for outreach with families • Schools with 21Century, OST, or Beacon after school programs or other partners can collaborate on family outreach and incentives • General school funds can be used for prizes used at recognition events (CR-A610) • Partner with local businesses, search for a partner, or request donations through an organization such as Pencil (pencil.org) or NYCares (newyorkcares.org) • PA fundraising monies • Grants
