Software continued • MAC • MAC OS X • MS Office 10 • MAC SSH
Microsoft Licensinguntil this past Fall (2001) • MOLP-B licensing • Bought full package plus licenses to install • Needed new licenses for new releases • Difficult to track licenses • Discontinued by Microsoft
Microsoft Licensing Current Agreement • Covers ALL institutionally owned machines • Count people – not machines or licenses • Keep software up to date and legal • One annual count, one annual payment • Rights to all versions (upgrades and downgrades)
Microsoft LicensingCurrent Agreement • Office Pro (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) • Office for MAC • Windows operating systems • Microsoft FrontPage (Windows only) • Includes upgrades and downgrades • Good through July, 2002
Future – working on Microsoft License through NERCOMP (NorthEast Regional Computing Program), of which Union is a member
NERCOMP-Microsoft LicensingBenefits • Covers ALL institutionally owned machines • Count people – not machines or licenses • Keep software up to date and legal • One annual count, one annual payment • Rights to all versions (upgrades and downgrades) • More products • Less expensive

Networking • Union’s Internet connection • Bandwidth shaping • Wireless networking • Virtual LANs (VLANs) • Security • Firewall • Virtual Private Network (VPN) • Virus protection • Phasing out or de-emphasizing
Union’s Internet connection • In December 2001 Union went from four (4) T1 lines providing up to 6 Mbps of access to an OC3 line currently providing 20 Mbps of access • Two parts to our Internet access: 1) line, 2) Internet access purchased • Verizon is our Internet Service Provider (ISP) • OC3 line is capable of 155 Mbps, providing for future growth (at additional access charge)
Bandwidth “shaper” • Used to efficiently manage the Internet bandwidth • Insures that high priority applications get bandwidth they need on a priority basis (e.g. WWW) • Stop bandwidth hog applications (e.g. Morpheus) from clogging the Internet pipe
Wireless Network • http://wireless.union.edu • Wireless network card available in College Bookstore for about $85.00. (Orinoco Gold card) – only card supported • Utilizing encryption
Wireless Network - locations • Schaffer Library • Library Plaza (outside) • Dutch Hollow (and some in Upperclass Dining) • Nott Memorial • Olin Learning Center (on 2nd floor) • Steinmetz 2nd floor • North S&E N106 labs in that hallway
Virtual LANs (VLAN) • Provide the capability to use a PC in any active network connection on campus without changing any network settings • Example: PC with an Academic IP address will work in a building that is normally used by administrative users
Security – a key issue • Network intrusion • Hackers • Viruses • Security patches for operating systems and other software
Firewall • Designed to protect Union College network from Internet hackers and attacks • Allows all outbound Internet traffic • Only allows specified inbound Internet traffic (e.g. Web servers) • Contact Bob at x6667 if you need to add new servers that need to be able to be accessed by Internet users
Virtual Private Networking (VPN) • New device designed to create a secure encrypted tunnel between the remote computer and the Union network • All services available on Union’s network are available to the remote user through this tunnel • Will eventually de-emphasize most of proxy server use
Virus Protection – for servers • Experimenting with virus protection for mail servers • Checks every piece of mail for presence of virus • Expensive
The future – being phased out • Some services transmit passwords over the Internet in plain text – easy to hijack these usernames and passwords • email clients that utilize plaintext passwords • telnet to be replaced by SSH client, VPN, . . . • ftp (WS_ftp, etc.) to be replaced by SSH ftp client, VPN, . . . • SSH clients available at http://www.union.edu/RESOURCES/ITS/RESOURCES/UNION/ftpserver.htm
The future – being de-emphasized • Proxy server – alternative: VPN
Summer Workshop/Training • Week of July 8- 12 • In the past Web page using FrontPage and presentations using PowerPoint • Will probably be redesigned for this summer • Other training • Blackboard • Other
