Out and About Journey Planning
What did we learn last time? • Choose safe routes • Use crossings if you can • If there’s no crossing, find somewhere safe – away from parked cars and bends in the road • Stay focussed – never cross while using a mobile or stereo • Don’t trust traffic • Use the Green Cross Code
THINK FIRST • STOP • USE YOUR EYES AND EARS • WAIT UNTIL IT'S SAFE TO CROSS • LOOK AND LISTEN • ARRIVE ALIVE
Your personal checklist • Money, including some for emergencies • A phone card or mobile phone • Let someone know who you are with • Let someone know where you are going • Work out how to get there • Arrange a time to be home • List of telephone numbers in case you need to ring someone • A plan in case something goes wrong
OUT AND ABOUT • What would you do if? …….
You have missed the bus home Can I go back into school and phone someone? Is there another bus I can catch?
One of your friends asks for a lift on your bike • Best not to risk it! • How good are you at negotiating or saying no?
Two of your friends are fighting on the bus • If you can’t calm the situation down – keep out of the way. • Let the driver know that there is a problem • If things are getting out of hand it may be safer for the bus to be stopped
Need to phone but no money • Make sure you know how to make a reverse charge call • Dial 100 and ask for the operator to connect them to the telephone number that they need • On mobile phones there is the option of dialling 0800 ‘reverse’
Quick Fire Round Take with me or Leave at home?
Have you done any of these? Hands up! • Planned a journey • Walked to somewhere • Done cycle training • Cycled somewhere • Travelled on a bus • Travelled on a train/underground
Safer journeys Now think walking somewhere new. Picture the journey. Is it as clear? Think about a journey that you know – to school perhaps. Picture the journey in your mind What do you see?
Practice, practice, practice! • It is a really good idea to practice your journey to your secondary school during the summer holidays. • Plan your route and walk it with your parents • Work out where it is safe to cross the road • Think about ….. • www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk
Getting to school How am I going to travel? Who will I travel with? How long will the journey take? What time will I have to leave in the morning?
Getting home from school How long will the journey take? What time will I get home? What time will I normally leave? How am I going to travel?
Now think about – What if ……? Money It’s dark – can I be seen easily Bus Pass Cycle Helmet I stay behind at school? Travelcard Have I got lots to carry? Is it raining?
How will my journey affect the planet? • What is climate change? • How does using a car for the journey to school affect the environment? • www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/Thewiderenvironment/Climatechange/DG_072920 • www.carbondetectives.org.uk
Sustainable Transport www.travelbuster.org.uk Cycle Walk Car Share Bus
Plenary • Can you remember your checklist • Have a plan for when things go wrong • Practice your journey before you start at your new school • Always think ‘what if ….?’ And have a plan • Think about the way that you will travel – is it kind to the environment?
