  2. Overview of Key Agencies Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council

  3. Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council • Advises the Government on national research, innovation and enterprise strategies • Chaired by the Prime Minister, and comprises of other Ministers, prominent captains of industry, and internationally renowned individuals from the scientific and academic communities

  4. National Research Foundation • Set up in Jan 2006 • Initial funding of S$5 billion for 2006-2010 • Implements strategies approved by RIEC • Allocates funding to programmes that meet the NRF strategic objectives

  6. Ministry of Education- Academic Research Fund • S$1.05 billion for 2006-2010 • Covers basic research at universities • Also cover investigator-led research that is broadly aligned with the long-term vision of the strategic interests of Singapore.

  7. Ministry of Health-National Medical Research Council • Established in 1994 • Provides research funds to healthcare institutions, national disease centres and tertiary public educational institutions • Leads the efforts for the funding of Phase two of the Biomedical Sciences Initiative

Singapore’s Biomedical Sciences Initiative • Launched in 2000 to develop the biomedical sciences cluster as one of the key pillars of Singapore’s economy • Three key agencies involved in developing this cluster: Biomedical Research Council (A*STAR), Economic Development Board’s Biomedical Science Group and EDB’s Bio*One

  14. A*STAR • Previously known as the National Science Council • National Science Council upgraded to statutory board and renamed the National Science & Technology Board on 11 Jan 1991 • In 2001 changed its name to Agency for Science, Technology and Research

A*STAR-BMRC • Established in 2000 • Oversees the development of core research capabilities within A*STAR research units • Actively promotes translational medicine and cross-disciplinary research, as part of its efforts to advance human healthcare • Supports biomedical research in the wider scientific community such as public universities and hospitals. • Engages in human capital development in the biomedical sciences and promotes societal awareness of biomedical research through outreach programmes

Bio*One Capital • Biomedical sciences investment arm of the Singapore Economic Development Board • Bio*One Capital invests in promising companies and play a value adding role in supporting their growth strategies through operations in Singapore • Manages 4 funds, approx. S$1.2 bill in total and has a portfolio of over 60 companies worldwide
