Bear Den - Pack 302 Winter Campout Safety Recommendations For Parents Scout Direct Supervision -Make sure your scout is in eyesight of you at all times. -Make sure your scout is not so far from you that you cannot reach him in in a short amount of time (seconds). -At no time should Scouts be allowed out on or near ice without direct adult supervision (meaning the adult is within a few feet of the Scout at all times). -Evenings are an opportunity for Scouts to run around and quickly disappear away from campfires, cabins etc. Parents should be especially watchful of their Scouts after dark to ensure their safety. -You must accompany your scout to the latrine or other out-building away from the cabin in which you are staying. He also cannot go to such places with only one adult who is not his parent (Must be at least two). -If you yourself need to go to the latrine or to your car, your scout must be in the presence of at least two other adults before you depart and you should let the parents know that you are leaving for a few seconds. Weather Safety -Make sure Scouts wear adequate protection when outdoors, dress in layers, wear gloves, hat. -Make sure Scouts drink plenty of water. -Check-in with your Scouts regularly when outside to assess for cold extremities, face, ears. -Err on the side of safety if you get complaints of coldness and consider going back to cabins. -Disallow snowball fighting, throwing of snow, climbing on rocks or ice. -Disallow shedding of hats, mittens if the weather is less than mild. -Wet clothes should be removed/changed once back inside of shelters/cabins Sanitary Practices -Make sure Scouts regularly wash hands after using the latrine and before eating anything. -Scouts should keep their hands off the faces, mouths of others. -No Sharing of food between scouts. -Touching food on group serving platters should be disallowed.
