17 NO TEACHING DAYS MEAN: “I do not know where else I can cut. I will have to get a second job.” “I will not be able to purchase supplies for my class.” “It will be the students who suffer the most.”
17 NO TEACHING – NO PAY DAYS MEAN: “As a single mom, I would have to give up my PPO, which I have due to a chronic health condition.” “My husband will need to work overtime hours--extending into the weekends to make up the loss. My income is an essential part of our budget. We are still trying to make up for the loss in our 401K savings that happened during the beginning of the recession.”
“That is an entire month’s worth of rent, bills, etc.” “Possible loss of home. No savings for summer. No year’s credit with STRS?” “We would lose our house!!!! Not be able to pay our bills!!!” “This would compromise my ability to make ends meet . I know that there will be an increase in my health care costs. Double hit!”
What’s Next ? You always say that you want to keep the cuts as far away from the classroom as possible. How is closing school down for 17 days not cutting to the core, not directly cutting in the classroom? It is up to you, the School Board, to make the decision …. not only for the students of the district who are most likely going to lose almost one month of instructionthat can never be reclaimed but for the dedicated RBTA members who consistently and carefully guide the youth of our city of Redondo Beach. This is not the time to try to build reserves….this is the time for holding fast to a complete year of learning for the kids of Redondo Beach.
