Chemical Reactions, Mixtures and Solutions, Acids and Bases Biology Chapter 6
Chemical Reactions • When bonds between atoms are formed or broken, causing a substance to combine and recombine as different molecules a chemical reaction occurs. A + B = AB AB = A + B
Chemical Reactions • Organisms have chemical reaction taking place over and over again in their bodies • Metabolism: all chemical reactions that occur within and organism • Breakdown and build important molecules for life
Mixtures vs Solutions • Mixture: combination of substances in which individual components retain their own properties • Beach sand • Solution: a mixture in which one or more substances are distributed evenly in another substance • Sugar and water
Mixture vs Solutions • In other words, a solution is when a solute is dissolved in a solvent and will not settle out of the solution • Solution terms: • Solutes: what is dissolved in the solvent • Solvents: what the solutes dissolve in
Mixtures vs Solutions • The more solute dissolved in a solvent the greater the solutions concentration • In our bodies, concentrations of dissolved substances need to stay within a certain narrow range in order for us to survive. • Ex. Pancreas produces insulin that keeps the amount of sugar dissolved in your bloodstream within a critical range
Acids and Bases • Chemical reactions can only happen when conditions are right • pH is the measure of how acidic or basic a solution is • 1-14 scale • Acidic • Basic
