  1. Interactions of LH with Edge Turbulence S. Zweben, J. Terry, O. Grulke, D. Stotler, S. Bernabei, D. D’Ippolito, B. LaBombard, J. Myra, G. Schilling, R. Wilson C-Mod Ideas Forum 12/2-3/04 Goal: Study effect of LH on edge turbulence and vice versa Method: Look at GPI + diodes with variable LH conditions Run time: Initially piggyback, maybe modulate LH later

  2. Possible Interactions • Change in edge turbulence level correlated with LH - reduction seen in HT-7 (Ding PPCF ‘04) - increase seen in ASDEX (Cesario NF ‘92) • Scattering of LH waves from edge turbulence - broadening of LH spectra in ASDEX (Cesario NF ‘92) • Parametric decay instabiltity - seen on Alcator C with CO2 scattering (Takase PF ‘85) • Change of edge Er due to loss of fast electrons at edge • Pondermotive force on edge plasma near LH antenna

  3. Possible Experiments on C-Mod • Look for changes in edge turbulence with LH, and try to isolate cause (change in edge parameters ?) • Check effect of gas puff on LH coupling (as in JET) • Modulate LH power in turbulence frequency range (needs small change in amplifier) • Vary phasing of LH to spatially resonate with turbulence • Intentionally create fast electrons in edge to change Er
